Curated Learning - for the Youtube generation (which is all of us now if you haven’t figured that out yet…)
No one has the time - that is the theme. It is so easy to do a quick search and watch a Youtube video, but how many do you have to weed through to even get a hint and knowledge?
What people need is a curated path to learning. The right books to read and in what order to get to their goal. Maybe there are some online courses as well - like those from MIT Open Courseware.
Someone states their goal and an expert in the field as well as someone who just followed a path contribute to give the fastest way to get there. A shortcut to knowledge with important experiences thrown in along the way.
Online I have tried to do this with my booklist, but a curated list with excepts cut out - cutting to the chase as fast as possible would be the key.
There is no time to read everything - why waste time with the wrong things. Great books lead to great conversations. We need to find a way to get the 5 min segment Youtube generation on a track to learning or their wisdom will be limited to what they can search.
Booklist/Resources that I have found to be fundamental and helpful:
“How to Read a Book,” Mortimer Adler [Read it twice-2nd time using their method. Well worth it. Read: begin through page 184, then 301-317 Skip: pages 187-298 Key ref. pages: 161-162, 326-327 ]
“The 2nd Law,” P.W. Atkins - great for exploring fundamental limits in physics and science without the math.
Thought/mind theory: Immanuel Kant - “Critique of Pure Reason”, “Critique of Judgement” -yeah it’s a pain - as an audiobook it may be more digestible.
Thought/mind empirical: “Thinking Fast and Slow,” Kahneman and “The Master and his Emissary,” McGilchrist
Capitalism: “Wealth of Nations,” Adam Smith followed by “Capitalism in the 21st Century,” Thomas Piketty
Fundamental Electromagnetics: “Experimental Researches in Electricity Vol. 3,” Michael Faraday - the drawings of the EM and M fields are unmatched for visual insight. Not for learning EM Theory. Free on LOC.gov
Building anything:“Structures” J.E. Gordon
Radiant Heat: “The Theory of Electrons and it’s applications to the phenomena of light and radiant heat,” H.A. Lorentz
Quantum and Light: “QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter,” Richard Feynman
World Development: “Gun, Germs, and Steel,” Jared Diamond and the newer “The Ages of Globalization,” Jeffrey Sachs
Media and Clubhouse/Twitter=Telegraph: “Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man,” Marshall McLuhan
